Season: autumn

I’ve used the general description “Carradale” for this beach page to showcase the variety of attractions here.  This is foremost a working fishing harbour and the village is welcoming, but there’s also the stunning Port Righ beach, located just south of Carradale Bay, which has its own sweeping sandy beach, leading you along to Carradale Point.  You have to make an effort to get to Carradale, as it’s off the main route, but it’s well worth the effort.

Blackwaterfoot

Season: autumn

Blackwaterfoot beach is a long strand, located in front of a golf course like so many of the Scottish beaches.  It sits by the eponymous town, benefiting from the facilities that it offers, including good parking.  The beach is sandy, with large pebbles and situated at the foot of steep cliffs.  The beach is also well-known for the “top 100” (12 hole) golf course that runs alongside it.  You really feel away from it all here.  This is one of those beaches where you lose yourself on a walk along it, then catch yourself wondering how far you’ve walked.

Whiting Bay

Season: autumn

Sitting quietly in the south east of Arran, Whiting Bay looks back across to the mainland.  The name reputedly derives from “Viking” Bay, rather than the fish.  The village is a popular tourist destination and there are fine eateries and water sports equipment for hire.  This is also a great place to walk from, perhaps through the woods of Glenashdale Falls, an impressive waterfall.  I recommend the Giant Grave walk, as well as the burial mound at King Cross, with its Viking associations.  Another tip is the wonderful Lamlash Bay, just north of here, with its sandy beach that looks across to the beautiful and historic Holy Isle.
