Portobello and Yellowcraig:

“What does the beach mean to you..?”

Portobello – ‘Beautiful harbour’ in English. And so it is for me.

Harbour. Port. The words conjure up images of safe havens, a place to get away from it all. Most of us have crowded lives. Mine is no exception as I manage luxury serviced city centre apartments in Edinburgh, London and Inverness where my team and I spend all our time making sure business and holiday guests can relax.
At Portobello there’s the tang and taste of fish and chips, the buzz of amusement arcades, the warming sight of families enjoying each other’s company, the reflected energy of joggers, the dancing patterns of light on the sea. It’s only a couple of miles from where I work but it’s a world away.
Life can be a beach, not a bitch.  Even when the sun’s not shining. We need more Portobellos.

North Berwick West Bay:

“What does the beach mean to you..?”

When I’m at the beach it’s the timelessness of the sea that fascinates me.  I love to stand and look out at the ocean, especially at night, when there is a full moon and a bright clear sky.  I watch and listen to the movement of the waves and I look to the moon and the stars and I imagine.  I imagine the generations of people before me who have stood and watched and listened.  I imagine back to the very first humans and I think about how I am looking at the same ocean and same moon and the same stars and I wonder at this totally awesome connection.

Open spaces.  Wild winds.  Crashing waves.
