Season: autumn
Sitting quietly in the south east of Arran, Whiting Bay looks back across to the mainland. The name reputedly derives from “Viking” Bay, rather than the fish. The village is a popular tourist destination and there are fine eateries and water sports equipment for hire. This is also a great place to walk from, perhaps through the woods of Glenashdale Falls, an impressive waterfall. I recommend the Giant Grave walk, as well as the burial mound at King Cross, with its Viking associations. Another tip is the wonderful Lamlash Bay, just north of here, with its sandy beach that looks across to the beautiful and historic Holy Isle.
What the beach means to Margo.
Peace and quiet at Whiting Bay.
Close by is Lamlash Bay looking out over the Holy Isle where you can take the wee ferry that runs in summer months. The waters in this area are part of the “No Take” Zone in which many sea creatures have recovered thanks to the Arran Marine Discovery Centre which is worth a visit in Lamlash.
