Season: summer

The beach at West Runton became well known for the discovery in 1990 of the skeleton of an ancient woolly mammoth, dating back to the time of a land connection to mainland Europe. West Runton has attracted fossil hunters for many years, but the rock pools here provide great enjoyment for children too.  Located handily between the facilities and attractions of Cromer and Sheringham, the beach here is sandy, except for towards and just after high tide, when it is shingle.  Bathing is safe, with Blue Flag status and this area is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest – West Runton Cliffs.

Sea Palling

Season: summer

The beach at Sea Palling is sandy, partly due to the nine offshore reefs put in place as part of a flood prevention scheme.  It also has Blue Flag status for the quality of its bathing water.  Swimming is safe here and there is cover from the RNLI inshore service.  The Norfolk Wildlife Trust (NWT) reserve at Hickling is only five miles away and both the NWT and RSPB have reserves that are easily reached from Sea Palling.   You can walk along the beach towards Waxham and Horsey (National Trust) to catch a glimpse of seals.   In short, there’s something for everyone at Sea Palling.

Season: autumn

This is a peaceful spot, with excellent coastal walking and fine views out over Morecambe Bay. The beach is shingle, soon switching to the sand of the bay further out.  St Cuthbert’s Church is right by the beach, adding to an Olde Worlde feel at Aldingham.  Dogs are welcome and a stroll here is a rejuvenating tonic.
