Season: spring

With some of the finest sand dunes in Norfolk, Winterton-on-Sea beach is both family friendly and a wonderful natural environment for wildlife.  As part of the Winterton – Horsey Dunes Site of Special Scientific Interest, you’ll find seals and their pups between here and Horsey Gap in December and January.  There is good access and parking nearby, plus a handy beach cafe just behind the beach.  There is always plenty of room on the beach, even at the busiest times of year.  Winterton-on-Sea is a charming village, with thatched cottages and a genteel feel.

Season: autumn

This popular family beach has easy access and there are beach huts behind it.  Located in a sandy bay, the water sports and boating areas are zoned for safety and the bathing water is excellent, in terms of cleanliness.  With a children’s play area, plus national sailing and windsurfing competitions to enjoy, as well as sunsets over the beach, Minnis Bay truly has something for every visitor.  Both Margate and Herne Bay can be easily reached from here and the immediately available facilities are first class.

Whitstable West Beach

Season: autumn

Whitstable West Beach, which is owned by the Whitstable Oyster Company but which has permissive access for the public, is predictably used by the local shell fishing fleet.  Whitstable is highly fashionable and well-heeled, with excellent eateries and shops.  West Beach is backed by beach huts and there is dinghy sailing in the season, as well as access to tennis courts.  The beach itself is shingle.  Although there is no lifeguard cover, swimming is safe here and the bathing water is clean.  Highly recommended.
