Season: autumn
Caerfai beach is perfect for a quiet family visit, being a sun trap where you can enjoy swimming and rockpooling in a safe and beautiful environment. The beach is within easy striking distance of the UK’s smallest city, St David’s, well worth a visit itself and also near to the Oriel Y Parc Visitor Centre. With an organic farm and farm shop that sells organic cheese just behind the beach, there’s plenty to enjoy on and around Caerfai beach.

Looking down on Caerfai Bay and its beach.
For me the beach means home. A feeling of knowing that although the scenery changes from one minute to the next, when I look at the cliffs, the rock pools, the shifting sands and out to sea, I am looking at a view that generations of family have looked at before me. I hope I never grow blind to its beauty.
Caerfai Bay beach is just a few minutes walk from the Caerfai Bay Campsite, overlooking the wonderful St Brides Bay. From the early 1980s we camped there every year with our four children and the highlight of every day was walking down the rocky path to the very intimate Caerfai Bay, which has a steep back drop of rocks and a lovely sandy beach at low tide…very safe, totally unspoilt, full of atmosphere and perfect for a young family.
Sandcastles would soon be washed away by the incoming tide and it was time for a BBQ and supper. In the morning the sun rose over the bay and there was always a sense of freedom and calm… and anticipation for another exciting walk down to Caerfai Bay.
