Season: summer
Located seven miles south of the Small Isle of Muck, Ardnamurchan Point and its Alan Stevenson lighthouse constitute the most westerly point in mainland Britain. As you can imagine, this is an isolated spot, forming the southern edge of Sanna Bay and approached by a long single track road. The beach is pristine and unspoilt, with a view extending as far as the Isle of Skye to the north. It’s a great getaway location, a fine place to regain or confirm perspective.
How the beach resonates for Pauline, here at Ardnamurchan Point.
By the edge of the land at mainland Britain’s most westerly point.
Growing up and living on the West Coast of Scotland, I have been really fortunate to have access to fantastic beaches – some of the best in Scotland. Many of my best memories take place on our local beaches, family picnics, swimming and camping with friends, and now enjoying the beaches with my son and nieces and nephews. Getting to see how much pleasure they get out of a day at the beach is really special. Ardnamurchan Point is such a special spot – not only the most Westerly point on the British Mainland, but a great location to see out to Coll, Tiree and the Small Isles; the islands feel so close. If you are really lucky in the summer months, basking sharks can be seen off the point.
