Pegwell Bay

Season: autumn

Located in a sheltered bay on the southern side of Ramsgate, Pegwell Bay and its beach are part of a Site of Special Scientific Interest, as well as comprising the northern end of the Sandwich & Pegwell Bay National Nature Reserve.  Not surprisingly then, the southern end of the crescent beach is a haven for wildlife, particularly when the tide recedes to attract wading birds and skittering oystercatchers.  There’s a hide to ensure privacy and to minimise disruption to the wildlife.  The northern end of the beach is popular with families and enjoys good access, as well as the facilities that nearby Ramsgate offers.  In short, there’s something for everyone at Pegwell Bay.

A natural wonderland at Pegwell Bay.  My reference to the Viking ship “The Hugin” should have been pronounced “Hoogin”.

Sandwich Bay

Season: autumn

Home to Sandwich’s three links golf courses, one of which hosts The Open, Sandwich Bay’s long beach is predictably backed by sand dunes.  The coastal strand stretches out between Deal to the south and Ramsgate to the north.  The village of Sandwich Bay is at the southern end, acting as a fine starting point to explore this stretch of coastline, where water sports are also popular.  This is a naturist beach and there is a Nature Reserve at the northern end of the beach.  The beach is a mixture of sand and shingle, being easy to walk on.  This is a great place to blow away the cobwebs.

Kingsdown Beach

Season: autumn

Sitting between Dover and Deal, Kingsdown beach is a quiet spot, backed by a pub and a coastal cycle track.  This is a place for reflection and tranquility.  As well as seals to enjoy out at sea, a low tide exposes interesting rock pools to explore.  There are chalk cliffs to one side, with scrubland behind.  Being a shingle beach, it falls away steeply, so swimming is best avoided, since strong currents operate here.  In short, this is a fine getaway, if you’d like time to think things through and if you have an appetite for all things natural.
