Season: autumn

Westbrook Bay has a quiet beach, which is handy for Margate and ideal for young families and children.  There are no arcades here, but there is good parking and access.  Children will enjoy the rock pools.  There’s a mini golf course, water sports facilities and tennis nearby.  Also, take a look into the town behind the beach for the Shell Grotto, where you’ll find 4.6 million shells in the network of passages, well worth a visit.  The water quality is good and this is a safe place to swim, with lifeguard cover from Easter to the end of September.

Season: autumn

Margate’s main town beach sits in the lea of its characterful harbour.  Also known as The Bay or Margate Sands, this is a traditional resort, which has been rejuvenated by the addition of the Dreamland theme park and the patronage of artists.  The Old Town Quarter of Margate has also been regenerated and popularised recently.  This feels like an awakened resort, diverse and cultured, featuring the impressive Turner Contemporary gallery, but rooted in its past too.  Margate beach is good for both people-watching and for enjoying the sights and sounds of a quintessential English seaside resort.

Season: autumn

Located just to the east of Margate, Walpole Bay has a long sandy beach with a tidal pool and this is a safe place to swim, with seasonal lifeguard cover.  Behind the beach are tall chalk cliffs and the short walk into Margate is flat and scenic.  Water sports are popular here, with jet skis for hire.  With a cafe and a games centre near to the beach, you can also enjoy a round of crazy golf on the upper promenade.  In short, you’re discreetly away from the town, but with plenty to enjoy.
