Season: summer

Excellent visibility was the order of the day at Burnham Deepdale for this summer visit.  Walking along the sea wall towards Scolt Head Island, I saw a couple of egrets and a redshank.  The sounds of nature resonated and there was a clear view across the salt marsh towards the sea.  This is a birder’s paradise and the walk also leads to the wonderful beaches at Holkham and Wells-Next-The-Sea.  Highly recommended in any weather.

A fine sight at Burnham Deepdale.

Season: winter

I visited during an afternoon in winter, with a pale sun shedding some light through the intense, stormy sky over Burnham Deepdale.  Although the tide was out and the sea felt miles away, the fragile scale of the sea wall gave this setting a frontier feel.  The greys, browns, blacks and blues of the land melded into the sky, so the environment seemed almost spherical, as if one was standing on a thin ribbon of land in the middle of it all.

Season: autumn

Burnham Deepdale is a tranquil and remote part of the Burnhams.  Located next to the village of Brancaster, it lies among the creeks and marshes inside Brancaster Harbour.  The sea wall stretches a mile inland to accommodate the tide, with salt marshes to one side and freshwater meadows in the other direction, affording an outstanding view.  This is a fascinating area, steeped in history, with Nelson’s birthplace, Burnham Thorpe, nearby, along with the Earl of Leicester’s Holkham Estate.

Hove beach

Season: spring

It’s always a pleasure to stroll along Hove’s wide promenade, which is next to the beach and which is backed by attractive beach huts and fine architecture.  This affluent annex to Brighton has drawn well-heeled visitors to the coast for many years, from the Victorian heyday of large hotels to the fashionable bistros and chic boutique hotels that are here now.

Season: winter

There’s an up-market feel to Hove, with colourful beach huts decorating the walkway by the beach. The promenade is much wider and smoother than Brighton’s, which makes it perfect for a leisurely walk. The beach hut area of Hove’s seafront is a designated barbecue and dog walking spot, with lifeguards on hand and regular beach patrols.

Season: spring

Littlehampton has two beaches, East Beach, also known as Coastguard Station and West Beach. They are split by the River Arun, a bustling marina and harbour and the town has fine architecture.  This was an opportunity to visit the pristine beauty of West Beach. There is a pleasing arc to the beach here and the dunes behind form a part of the golf course’s geography. The setting includes a nature reserve that surrounds the tumbledown West Point Fort.  You can see sand lizards, oyster catchers, cormorants and much more.  It’s a tranquil setting. Interviewee Terry, his wife and I were the only souls here in the middle of the day.  For reference, East Beach offers a range of exciting pursuits, from boating trips to deep sea fishing, or scuba diving to water skiing and sailing.  The promenade there also hosts the famous East Beach Café and there are parks and boating lakes that draw people to Oyster Pond and Mewsbrook Park.

“Peace and solitude” at the beach for Terry.
