Season: summer

The receding tide had filled the lido on the beach at East Bay, which is also known as Milsey Bay.  It was full of paddling children, with the shallow sea water warmed by the hot summer sun.  Blue skies framed the enormous Bass Rock and its gannet colony offshore.  I chatted to Noelle about the role of the Scottish Seabird Centre and learned about the boat trips for visitors to see the birds close up.  Summer had arrived in North Berwick.

Season: winter

This is an expansive beach, offering fine views of Bass Rock and the Firth of Forth.  The rocks by the beach have a pool cut into them for paddling, making this a safe family visitor destination.  With a picturesque harbour nearby and boats to take people out from the Sea Bird Centre to Bass Rock, there’s plenty to enjoy for every visitor to this part of East Lothian.

Season: summer

Fine weather was the order of the day at Earlsferry beach for this summer visit.  Early arrivals on the beach were emptying beach huts and organising their space, settling in for a day at the beach.  This is the western end of a long, sweeping strand from here round to Elie Harbour.  The sand is golden brown, soft and welcoming under foot.  All the facilities a visitor might need are close at hand, with fine views out to the sea.

Tobermory beach

Season: summer

Tobermory is the main town on Mull, a fishing port that is also the ferry terminal from either Oban or Kilchoan on the Ardnamurchan peninsula.  With its colourful houses and shops by the water, its also a delightful visitor destination and the first impression for visitors of Mull and the beaches that they are looking forward to enjoying.  I recommend stopping for a while, to appreciate the fine seafood and boutique hotels, or perhaps to take a whale and dolphin watching trip from the harbour.  The shops are varied and independent, including a pottery, library and other less mainstream attractions.
