Season: summer

This sand, shingle and pebble beach is set in an exquisite rural environment, the Thorness Bay Site of Special Scientific Interest.  With woodland behind the beach, the area is a place to get away from it all, with fine views out to sea.  As a result, the beach is popular with anglers and there are striking sunsets to enjoy too.  For fossil hunters, Thorness Bay includes parts of the Hamstead Beds and the Insect Beds of the Bembridge Marls.

Yarmouth is dominated by its harbour and the yachting berths.  The small shingle beach sits in the lea of the pier.  Located by the Royal Solent Yacht Club, the beach is part of the town, which has enjoyed a strategic historical significance.  The beach is used for launching and returning dinghies and the adjacent town reflects the maritime emphasis here, with genteel cafes, bars and restaurants all adding to an up-market impression.  A worthwhile attraction in the town is the excellent Drift shop on the High Street, featuring exotic ethnic treasures, found during off-season international travel.

Season: summer

With daily beach cleans and excellent bathing water quality, Colwell Bay is a popular water sports destination in West Wight, with a slipway for boat and kayak access.  There are beach huts and deckchairs for hire too, if you’re feeling more sedentary.  Access is good via a promenade and the sea wall that runs down to Totland Bay.  Families are attracted here, with good parking, toilets and a beach cafe.  The setting is topped off by fine views across to the Dorset coast.
