Season: autumn

Bright sunshine greeted me for this visit to Torre Abbey Sands, the walk to the beach via Abbey Park always a pleasure.  A silver sea lit the view over to Brixham and Paignton as visitors promenaded by the beach.  This is an affluent area of Torquay, with fine restaurants and hotels at hand.  A wall divides the beach from the road and the traffic, creating a peaceful haven, without having to leave the convenience of the town.  Highly recommended.

Season: summer

Torre Abbey Sands are a long strand in Torquay on the English Riviera.  The beach lies just west of the harbour and marina, with excellent access and a park called Abbey Park nearby. The bathing water is European designated and there are shops, restaurants and a promenade behind the beach.  You’ll also find colourful beach huts and a rocky cove at the end of the beach.  A fine town beach.

Season: autumn

The sun was shining and the beach still attracted visitors, despite it being the end of the school holidays.  Fine views across a silver sea towards Exmouth featured in the east, while ancient desert sand cliffs framed the main railway line towards Teignmouth to the west.  I enjoyed a last view of the first four groynes on the beach, as these were due to be removed under the Beach Management Scheme.

Dawlish Warren beach is almost a mile long, sitting opposite Exmouth on the other side of the Exe Estuary.  Behind the attractive, sandy beach is Dawlish Warren National Nature Reserve, a wildlife sanctuary by the sea that can boast over six hundred species of flowering plants in its grassland.  Rangers supervise pond-dipping and tours for visitors to the reserve.  Nearby Dawlish offers further coastal views and excellent shopping for the visitor.

Exmouth has an excellent sandy beach that stretches for two miles to the west of the harbour. The backdrop to the beach comprises a long promenade and the town itself has gardens and parks to enjoy.  Access is straightforward and there’s always marine traffic to watch as you walk along.  This is a good example of a town beach.
