Season: autumn

Perched on a headland at one end of Carmarthen Bay, Tenby features three sandy beaches, North, Castle and South, which are laid out either side of the Castle Hill headland.  The vibe fluctuates between sleepy and boisterous in nature, depending on the season, with a quaint old town bounded to the west by the city walls.  If you’re careful with the tides, there’s an enjoyable walk across to St Catherine’s Island from Castle beach.

Peace and quiet at the beach for Elaine.

Season: summer

Located seven miles south of the Small Isle of Muck, Ardnamurchan Point and its Alan Stevenson lighthouse constitute the most westerly point in mainland Britain.  As you can imagine, this is an isolated spot, forming the southern edge of Sanna Bay and approached by a long single track road.  The beach is pristine and unspoilt, with a view extending as far as the Isle of Skye to the north.  It’s a great getaway location, a fine place to regain or confirm perspective.

Season: summer

The Silver Sands of Morar make up the most northern of a string of beautiful beaches that stretch south from below Mallaig to Arisaig, the other two being Camusdarach and Arisaig itself.  Testimony to the wild, natural beauty here is the fact that Morar beach was used in the films “Local Hero” and “Breaking the Waves”.  Morar is a station stop on the magnificent train line between Fort William and Mallaig, featuring the steam train known as “The Jacobite” and crossing the spectacular Glenfinnan viaduct further to the east,  This is a spectacular part of the Highlands.
