Season: summer
Located in close proximity to neighbouring Beesands, Slapton Sands is also a long, east-facing beach, looking out into Start Bay and towards the lighthouse. At the southern end of this three mile long beach is Torcross, but you can also access the beach half way up the strand via the memorial car park, or at its northern end, from the Strete Gate car park. The Torcross end of the beach has clean, European designated bathing water, with a summer lifeguard service and the whole beach benefits from the Slapton Ley Nature Trail, located just behind the beach.

A bright day at Slapton Sands.
I stand with bare feet touching the golden shingle of Slapton Sands and the sweeping curve of Start Bay opens my mind’s eye.
I look right and see the bold outline of Start Point Lighthouse sitting on its rugged peninsula. I imagine the keepers of long ago tending their warning light for ships at sea.
I look left and spot the distant Mewstone, the rocky throne of grey seals and the entrance to Dartmouth harbour. I hear the sea birds calling from its top-most pinnacle.
I smell the clear and deep blue-green water and wish that it will be forever awash with bass and wrasse, starfish, lobsters and crabs.
All my senses feel this wonderful space . . . the beach, the sea, the space – they rejuvenate, energise and comfort me, always.
