Located on the Ayrshire Coastal Path, Dunure is an attractive village, with a charming harbour. The remains of a 13th Century castle, the seat of Clan Kennedy, stand by the shore. The beach comprises shingle and sand, with rocky outcrops to explore. There are fine views across to the Mull of Kintyre, to the Isle of Arran and even to Northern Ireland, on a sunny day. It is said the Mary, Queen of Scots, once stayed at the castle in the 16th Century, so time can become elastic here, as so often at the beach.
