Season: autumn

Once the location for the locally well known Melody Inn, this beach has long been a Wirral favourite.  There’s an adjacent pub, which is named after the old Derby Pool, again once a local point of interest.  Nowadays, kitesurfing, dog walking, swimming in the good quality bathing water and coastal birdwatching illustrate the diversity of Wallasey beach’s appeal.  Wirral Council Coastal Rangers are on hand with friendly advice and the beach is regularly cleaned.

Season: autumn

Sitting between Formby and Southport, Ainsdale beach is the only north west beach with a Blue Flag award for the high quality of its bathing water. The beach is regularly cleaned and there is extensive lifeguard cover.  It is popular with families and there is a dog exclusion zone, with pets allowed elsewhere on the beach. The Ainsdale and Birkdale Hills Local Nature Reserve sits behind the dunes and this is a breeding ground for the Natterjack Toad.  There’s also The Ainsdale Discovery Centre by the beach, where you can hire bikes.  With water sports also high on the agenda, there’s plenty for everyone at Ainsdale beach.  The nearby village has restaurants and independent shops to enjoy after a bracing beach walk.

This beach is separated from the town by a dune system and a National Trust Reserve, Formby Pinewoods, which has red squirrels and neolithic remains.  There’s a large car park behind the dunes, so access is good.  It’s an attractive, sandy beach, popular with visitors, walkers and fishermen.  There is a designated dog exercise area and Formby beach forms part of the Sefton Coast Site of Special Scientific Interest.
