Season: autumn
Southerness has a long sandy beach, stretching either side of Southerness Point and its distinctive lighthouse, which dates from 1749. There’s a golf course behind the section of beach in Gillfoot Bay, as well as plenty of parking, including at Southerness Point itself. There are no dog restrictions and this is an attractive section of coastline for walking, located within the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. If you’re lucky, you’ll see dolphins and porpoises in the Solway Firth. The bathing water here is of an excellent quality and this is a safe beach to swim from. There are widespread facilities in the area, including restaurants, a campsite and a hotel.
