Season: spring

Lamlash Bay sits on the east side of Arran.  There is a wonderful view from the pier across to the Holy Isle, a place of great spiritual resonance since the time of the hermit, St Molaise in the 6th Century.  The harbour was historically more significant than Brodick Bay, for example sheltering King Hakon IV of Norway’s boats before their defeat at The Battle of Largs in 1263.  This effectively ended the Viking threat to Scotland.  Nowadays it is an affluent yachting harbour and a popular visitor and tourist destination.  Day trips are available to The Holy Isle, which is three kilometres long and rises to over a thousand feet at Mullach Mor.  From a conservation point of view, the northern section of the bay is designated as a “No Take Zone” to protect marine life and fish stocks.

Season: autumn

Magilligan Strand stretches a full seven miles from Castlerock in the east to Magilligan Point in the west, taking in Benone beach and Downhill Strand along the way.  This is a glorious sandy shoreline, backed by a large dune system that is home to varied wildlife and birds.  Access is via boardwalks through the dunes.  Magilligan Strand is a Blue Flag beach, fine for swimming in the clean water.  There is seasonal lifeguard cover and the beach is regularly cleaned.

Season: autumn

Separated from The Strand Portstewart by the arrival at the sea of the River Bann, Castlerock beach features basalt cliffs at its western end.  It runs east in front of dunes and the Castlerock Golf Course via a promenade to the river.  The surface is sandy and the dunes are part of the Bivenagh Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.  The adjacent town of Castlerock is friendly and welcoming, with plenty of facilities for any discerning visitor.
